what is Nekton?

Nekton is a group of pelagic animals that swim independently of water motion or wind. Only three phyla have adult forms represented in nekton. Chordate consists of various species of bony fishes, cartilaginous fishes like sharks, reptiles such as turtles, snakes, saltwater crocodiles, and mammals like whales, porpoises, and seals. Molluscan nekton include squids and octopods, while arthropod nekton are limited to decapods like shrimps, crabs, and lobsters.

Although herbivorous nekton are not common, a few species of nearshore and in shallow waters survive by feeding on plants. Among feeding types, zooplankton feeders are the most abundant, including bony fishes like sardines and mackerel, and the largest such as baleen whales. Molluscans, sharks, and many larger bony fishes prey on animals larger than zooplankton. Other fishes and most crustaceans are scavengers.

Marine nekton are aquatic creatures that swim in the ocean. They vary in size, from tiny euphausiids (krill) to the largest whales. Many of these creatures play a significant role in fisheries. Micronekton, which is the main focus of this article, refers to small such as fishes, squids, and shrimps.

They can be found in all oceans and at various depths. A lot of species engage in diel vertical migrations, moving towards the surface waters as the light decreases at dusk, and then descending into deeper waters before dawn. Some are bioluminescent, often having photophores oriented towards their undersides. Apart from vertical migrations, it is also known that certain micronekton migrate horizontally over slope waters to shallow areas during the night.

Nekton refers to a collection of marine or lake organisms that exhibit group swimming behavior and possess strong swimming abilities, enabling them to swim against the current. Typically, nekton organisms are vertebrates, meaning they have bones or cartilage, and they are generally larger than microbes. Examples of organisms include sharks, dolphins, turtles, sea cows, crustaceans, shrimp, and even squid.
